J C4:Barafu Camp(4673m)

On the 4th day, we took the orange line in the picture. That morning,
we left Barranco Camp for Karanga Camp (3995m) for lunch after Breakfast Wall.

After Breakfast Wall, we climbed up and went down, up and down,
and up and down... So it was a bit hard but I completely forgot that
I was tired because of a great scenery; African alpine desert area.

Japanese snacks I brought "Onigiri Senbei" was very very popular among everyone!!
The bags were filled with air because of high altitude looking like balloons.

---------- The Weather of Mt. Kilimanjaro ---------

The sky was very clear in the morning, but suddenly we got caught by misty rain and high winds.

I was very interested in Kilimanjaro weather. Morning = very fine. Afternoon = wet.
Evening = Strong rain. Night = Starry sky... It was like this every day. The guides said,
"From the end of December to Feburary, we always have a dry season and hardly have rain,
but the weather has been crazy recently! So the sky is changing all day long as we have global warming..."

---------- Karanga Camp (3995m) ---------

We managed to make it to Karanga Camp under the bad weather.

Lunch time!! Deep fried chiken and french fries. I like everything
but the salad and the boiled veggies for main dish???

Corns and pasta again and again??? Enough already!!

Like this morning, Franziska said to me again, "Hey Syuhei, I can't eat any more.
Would you like to have my French fries?" So I took hers without any hesitation. lol

---------- Barafu Camp (4673m) ---------

After the lunch, we kept going up the long uphill from Karanga Camp.
About 4500m high, we went through a great alpine desert area in open secenery.
We were very lucky that we were again under the clear sky just then.

We finished going across the open ground like in the picture below
and climbed up around the mountain at tha far back and made it to
Barafu Camp (4673m) : the final distination for the day at about three-thirty.

Right before we got there the sky started to get suddenly very cloudy
and we had thunders, and got caught by strong rain at that moment.
On top of that, the rain changed to snow and finally, we got a hard snow storm

The weather was so awful that I couldn't take out ma camera,
so I didn't have any pictures of Barafu Camp to share with you. So sorry...

We escaped into our tents right away. But! But! But! All the snow
on the rain gears started to melt in the tents, so the sleeping bag,
the backpack, the duffel bag, and the seat for the tent... got soaking wet...

I wanted to take lots of rest before attacking the summit
that night, but it was impossible! No way of doing so!!

To be continued!!
