12:The Most Southern Point of This Trip
"Petermann Island"

In the afternoon, we went south a bit and got to "Petermann Island."
Mainly adelie penguins live there and gentoo penguins live at the most southern island.

After we arrived there, we went on the rubber boats and headed for the island.
We landed on the island for the 1st time on this trip.

In the Antarctica, the snow surface seemed flat but actually
there were some holes called "clepas," which we were invisible,
so it's very dangerous... For that reason, during this trip,
the expedition staffs landed on the islands first all the time
before we landed. Then they checked the land for clepus
for us and they posted the flags at the safe spots.

We could see something red on the snow field. They told us they are krill.

There were just penguins everywhere on the island. And also, broken egg shells!!

The season when we visited was the time for the penguin babies to be born.
So we could see lots of pairs with their babies

Gentoo penguins

Adelie penguins

Chinstrap penguins

On top of that, we could see some cormorants and some bad birds called "Antarctica Pomarine Skua," which try
to take babies away. So we could see very precious scenes which we can never see in the aquariums.

Check the movie for the babies below!!

----- Again, Going through Lemaire Channel -----

We completed the sightseeing and the Sea Spirit got back to the north
through the Lemaire Channel. And there were lots more drifting ices than the morning
so we could hear very loud noise of the drifting ices crashing when the Sea Spirit travelled
through icy sea. I felt that I joined drifting ice tours in Hokkaido; the most northern island of Japan.

In the evening, we heard the today's activity report
and received tomorrow's schedule from the expedition staffs.
We had dinner, and couldn't wait for the next day.
Good Night with dreams of the gorgeous icebergs
and pretty penguins we saw on that day!!
